What to do in Mexico City : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Mexico, Mexico City has more than eight million people. Located at 2,250 meters altitude, it was built by the Aztecs and destroyed by the Spaniards, and is today an important cultural and economic centre. However, it has problems with crime, pollution and particularly overpopulation. The climate is temperate due to its altitude, with a dry winter and hot spring. In the centre of the city you will find the historical district, the Zocalo or Plaza de la Constitucion, listed as a World Heritage site by Unesco, the site of various archaeological excavations where the Pre-Columbian city was founded, now dominated by the Metropolitan Cathedral, built from 1573 to 1813, mixing Baroque and Renaissance styles. Close by is the Palacio Nacional, which houses works from the colonial era, together with frescoes by Diego Rivera. Visit the national Anthropological Museum to see Mayan and Aztec objects from different archaeological sites, stroll in the Alameda Park or in the Chapultepec Woods with its gardens, zoo and museums. You can also visit the Leon Trotsky House Museum, the Casa Azul de Frida Kahlo, the beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes in Carrere marble, and the flower gardens of Xochimilco among other places in the city. An international airport serves the city, and you will find the subway and Metrobus convenient for moving around the city.
