What to do in Buenos Aires : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires has a population of around three million, over twelve million if the entire urban agglomeration is included. One of the country’s major ports and its economic and political centre, Buenos Aires is also the cultural centre due to its high number and range of museums, libraries, art galleries and theatres. The major tourist attractions are in the city centre including the quarters of Monserrat and San Telmo, the Plaza de mayo, Casa Rosada, Metropolitan Cathedral, Palais du Congrès de la Nation, Palacio Barolo and the Café Tortoni are some interesting architectural examples, often mixing modern and colonial styles. There is a high concentration of theatres and operas in Buenos Aires, the Teatro Colon can alone receive an audience of 3,000. It is impossible to escape the Tango here, even in the restaurants and cafes where there are daily displays. You may also wish to visit the green and relaxing places in the city such as the Botanical gardens, the zoo, the planetarium and the Bosques de Palermo. For nightlife visit the Avenue Corrientes where theatres, cinemas and cafes abound and fill the night with life, light and music. Those who wish to do some shopping will enjoy browsing along the Calle Florida, a pedestrian road with many luxury shops and boutiques as well as folk music groups.
