What to do in Yangon (Rangoon) : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Burma (or Myanmar), Rangoon has a population of just over 4 million. Founded in the 6th Century, the city was colonized by the British in the 19th Century and partly destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami in the early 20th Century. Located in the south of the country, it has beautiful wooded parks, lakes, magnificent pagodas and many colonial vestiges. You will certainly notice the Shwedagon Pagoda, perched on a hill overlooking the city, with its golden stupa. But visitors will also find many other historical sites, museums, and markets to stroll through pleasantly. Do not miss the park and Bogyoke Aung San museum, the Botahtaung pagoda with its maze of mirrors, Buddha Chauk Htat Kyee and the Hlawgar zoo boasting 70 species of animals. Taking a trip on the circular train is also a great way to discover the daily life of the city and its surrounding villages. Regarding accommodation, a range of hotels, modest and luxurious, can be found around the city, as well as many restaurants where you can enjoy Burmese, Chinese, Korean or Thai cuisine. You can access Rangoon by air thanks to its international airport which links to a number of Asian countries.
