What to do in Valletta : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of the Republic of Malta, Valletta has a little more than six thousand inhabitants. It is well known for being home to the largest number of historical monuments per square metre site and is listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The city is served by an international airport, but inner city traffic is quite limited due to the city confines with its steep streets and pedestrian areas. Admire the baroque architecture of the city, the streets laid out in a checkerboard pattern, and via Republic Street, visit its monuments such as the Grand Masters Palace with multiple rooms furnished with tapestries and sumptuous objects, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Archaeology, St. John's Cathedral with its gilding and beautiful paintings. Do take a stroll in the Merchant's street market early in the morning, and also along the ramparts. Gastronomy is also a high point as you can taste typical local dishes in many city restaurants. Do not expect to find a beach for swimming in the city itself, despite the mild climate, the most accessible beach is fifteen kilometres away.
