What to do in Uganda
Here are the main sites that you can discover in this magnificent country:
Lake Victoria: Here is the source of the Nile, in this immense expanse (70,000 km2), the largest lake in Africa, more than a thousand meters above sea level. It is relatively shallow, but its waters abound in fish. We are also interested in the Ssese islands, an archipelago of 84 wooded islands, which has become a popular holiday destination for tourists and rich Ugandans, especially Bugala with its hotels, beaches and water activities. Entebbe: this is the international airport of the country, but this does not prevent the city of Entebbe from being a beautiful city, where nature is queen, and where the traveler can stop at his arrival In one of the peaceful hotels it houses. Kampala: the capital is located in the center of the country, it is a modern city with several places of interest, such as the Tombs of the Kings, the Uganda Museum, and many markets where to find works of art and African crafts. The only real big city in Uganda, it offers strong contrasts between the vibrant and bustling city center and its green and serene residential neighborhoods. Murchinson Falls are located in Murchinson National Park, which is also the largest in the country, with immense savannahs, forests, and the famous falls that descend from Albert Lake, creating an extraordinary sight to see absolutely. National parks: there are other parks and nature reserves in Uganda, and these are its major attractions. You can choose between the Kipedo Valley National Park, Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve, Queen Elizabeth National Park and others, where you can observe buffalo and elephants, lions, chimpanzees, crocodiles And hippos, and especially gorillas, since Uganda is home to more than half of those living on the planet. |
Uganda: The basics
A visa is required to enter the country.
The current currency is the Ugandan Shilling (Ush). You can take a direct Paris-Entebbe plane. To get around the country, the bus is the cheapest means of transport, with regular connections from major cities. You can also choose the car, preferably a 4X4 if you want to leave the main axes, which can be rented with or without driver. Be careful, we drive to the left in Uganda! The budget to be envisaged is not insignificant according to the objectives: if you wish to visit the national parks, it will be necessary to consider more than 150 € per day for the nights in lodge and the safaris organized by an agency. Otherwise, count between 20 and 80 € per day depending on your type of accommodation and the places where you eat. Health: Vaccination against yellow fever is obligatory, and it is advisable to add those against hepatitis A and B, meningococcal meningitis A and C, diphtheria, and rabies if you plan to make an "adventure" circuit . Also take a treatment against malaria, avoid walking barefoot and bathing in stagnant water, protect yourself from mosquitoes. Drink bottled water and wash your raw foods well. Security: It is recommended to be vigilant in public places, not to mingle with rallies and other events, to avoid the night movements in town or on the roads. It is also unwise to visit the border area with Sudan and the Republic of Congo. Shopping: You will find local handicrafts such as basketry, colored fabrics, but also vanilla, which Uganda exports in quantity. |
