What to do in Sierra Leone
The capital, Freetown, is also a major port, with a large proportion of the country's population. You can admire St. George's Cathedral, the National Museum with De Ruyter Stone, Foulah Town Mosque, Queen Elizabeth Wharf and its huge boats, and the lively and colorful main market.
The Outamba Kilimi National Park in the north, covered with hills, forests and grassy plains, is home to monkeys, hippos, buffaloes and elephants. In Loma Mountians Forest, a sumptuous forest with gigantic trees that surrounds Mount Bintumani, you can observe several species of monkeys, especially chimpanzees. If you go south-east of the country, discover the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary which, although the smallest reserve of Sierra Leone, has a very rich animal diversity, with its crocodiles, monkeys and hippos, and especially its 120 Species of birds. Not to be missed is Tacugama's chimpanzee reserve, set up in the hills near Freetown, which opened in 1995 to rescue chimpanzees whose families were stolen or exterminated, or that the destruction of their environment threatened death. The Ebola virus was also a dramatic factor for them, but the center was able to reopen in early 2015. As for the coast, its 400 kilometers offer beautiful beaches and many mangroves. The area of Freetown is especially spoiled with its beautiful expanses of sand, such as Lumley Beach and River No. 2 Beach, the most renowned. If you like water sports, visit the beaches of the Turtle Islands, 60 km further south. |
