Capital of Ecuador, Quito has more than two million inhabitants, and its population continues to grow. Situated at an altitude of 2,800 metres, the city was founded by Spanish conquistadors in the early 16th Century, but it was already populated from before 900 years BC. It is served by an international airport, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its remarkable colonial architecture. It has a subtropical climate, with dry summers and wet winters.
