The capital of the State of Arizona in the United States, Phoenix has a little over one and a half million inhabitants. Located in the Salt River valley in the desert, the city benefits from a very hot dry climate with mild, sunny winters. The city prospered with the arrival of the railway in the late 19th Century, and it became a resort for retirees in the second half of the 20th Century mainly due to its clean, dry air. It is served by Sky Harbor International Airport, and several attractions are available to tourists who visit Phoenix including the Desert Botanical Museum with its collection of plants from arid regions, the Heard Museum with a collection dedicated to Native American art, the Mystery Castle with its strange architecture, and also the old gold diggers city a few miles from Phoenix. Many sports activities can be enjoyed here, especially golf, for which there is over a hundred courses around the city! The arts are also very present in the city, with an opera, a symphony orchestra and several theatres. In addition, the hotel facilities are excellent offering various types of accommodation.
