What to do in Philadelphia : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Philadelphia is a city in the state of Pennsylvania, the United States of America, with almost one and a half million inhabitants. Located on the banks of the Delaware River, it is a major historical, cultural and artistic centre. Its history is marked by the presence of the original Algonquin people, followed by the arrival of Swedish, Dutch and English settlers, and finally by its role in the American independence. It experiences a hot and humid climate in summer, a warm spring and autumn, and generally harsh winters. Two international airports serve the city, which has a vibrant cultural life with many events and a rich heritage in museums and monuments. Visit Independence Hall, see the Liberty Bell, the Masonic Temple, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, and visit some of the numerous museums, either science based such as the Academy of Natural Sciences, or more contemporary exhibitions such as the Abington Art Centre. Cobbled streets and picturesque houses testify to the city’s past, while its ubiquitous murals reveal its place in the present. Regarding entertainment, the Philadelphia Opera is renowned worldwide and the city’s dance company also has an excellent international reputation.
