Suriname capital Paramaribo is located on the Suriname River in the north, a little inland over the ocean, and has just under 300 000. Its old town has a particular architecture, which blends European techniques and South America, which has earned it World Heritage of UNESCO. The city has an international airport, but there is no direct flight from France, a stopover takes place in Amsterdam in general. The traveler can find several attractions: Fort Zeelandia, from the 17th century and built by French settlers, now a museum; St Petrus Paulus cathedral, which is the largest wooden building in South America, with its two tall steeples and world heritage of UNESCO; Amadya the mosque built in 1971; the presidential palace, close to the river, all white and very imposing; the Independence Square, with the bronze statue of Johan Adolf Pengel, politician 60s; the beautiful houses of Waterkant Boulevard; Neve Shalom synagogue; the Finance Ministry entirely in brick, with a white tower over 30 meters high; the Palm Grove Park, with its 1000 palm trees; the Butterfly Garden, one of the largest farms of known breeding butterflies. You can travel by shared taxi or minibus. Note: one of the elements that makes the interest of the city is the mix of cultures, with the presence of Amerindian, Dutch, Indian, Creole, Pakistani, Javanese and Chinese.
