What to do in Panama City : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

Panama CityEponymous capital of the country, Panama City (Panama City called to avoid confusion) has just under one million inhabitants. It is located on the Pacific coast, right at the entrance of the famous canal. The old town, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, the beginning of the 16th century and was originally a simple fishing village: there remains the ruins because it was largely burned by pirates in 1671. It ' is obviously the construction of the Panama Canal, completed in 1914, which provoked the development of the city and the country. Very hilly, Panama has four large parks, which contrast with the large number of skyscrapers (over a hundred) that dot the city, including twenty exceeds two hundred meters high. For visitors, the city is as cut in two by the canal, with on one side the old buildings in the old town and on the other the tall buildings of the business district. Many sites to visit are: the historic districts, Casco Viejo and Panama Vieja; Cathedral of the old city; markets, to buy handicrafts; Plaza de Francia, which honors the memory of thousands of dead workers in the construction of the canal; the viewpoint of Miraflores Locks where you will witness the incessant passage of cargo; Bolivar Square so charming and pretty church of Saint Francis of Assisi, worth visiting; Metropolitan National Park, very interesting tropical reserve; Cerro Ancon, a hill covered in lush vegetation overlooking the city, to have a superb panoramic view after a half hour of ascension. Night owls will be met through salsa clubs or nightclubs of Amador Causeway. The city is served by an international airport located 25 km from the center, in Tocumen. For traveling in town, you'll use taxis rather cheap, the bus, but walking tours are needed in older neighborhoods.
