What to do in Noumea : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The main city of New Caledonia, Noumea is also the county town, and has fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. It is the largest French-speaking city in the French overseas territories, and although there is quite a multi-ethnic mix the dominant culture is clearly European. Located on a peninsula, it has rugged terrain and is built on several hills. Its position by the sea enables it to be a significant tourist destination, with opportunities for swimming and water sports. Its tropical climate is fairly mild, with temperatures tempered by the trade winds that average above 26°C and below 20°C. It can however be subject to cyclones like the rest of New Caledonia. The vegetation is lush and you can enjoy beautiful hiking trails and discover a forest park with endemic species. The city is very cosmopolitan, and you will enjoy the historical centre with Coconut square, the Heavenly Fountain, the bandstand, the Cathedral of St. Joseph, the Latin Quarter with the Territorial Museum, the market and the marina. The South quarter is the most touristic part of the city, with its aquarium, beaches, bars and restaurants. From the small tourist trains you can also admire the beautiful natural scenery.
