The capital of Niger in Africa, Niamey has 750 thousand inhabitants. Located on the Niger River, it experiences a desert climate with fairly frequent sandstorms and very low precipitation. A commercial and industrial centre of the country, it is also a cultural centre. You can visit the National Museum of Niger, covering more than twenty hectares and reproducing habitat types from across the country, with a huge variety of home crafts that are created before your eyes, all this next to the hippopotamus pool. See the Great Mosque with its emerald green domes and marble interior and climb to the top of the minaret to enjoy a magnificent view of the city. As in all African countries, the Grand Market is definitely worth a detour for the diversity of its products and its colourful and fragrant atmosphere. Nature lovers are sure to want to visit the giraffes at Kouré, about fifty kilometres from the city. You'll have no trouble finding a restaurant among the many establishments in the city. Do not expect, however, to find a bustling city with a vibrant nightlife, Niamey is a quiet city on a human scale, where nature is always near.
