What to do in New Orleans : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The largest city in the state of Louisiana in the United States, New Orleans has more than 300,000 inhabitants. An industrial and commercial centre, the city is located on the banks of the Mississippi; it has an active port and a vibrant cultural life. Jazz has heavily contributed to its international reputation. It was recently devastated by Hurricane Katrina, and the reconstruction is ongoing. Although the city is English, it is marked by its French past and Caribbean culture. You can visit Saint-Louis, the oldest U.S. cathedral, on Jackson Square, there is also the Aquarium, the Laura Plantation transformed into a museum where you can discover everyday life before the Civil War, the unusual cemeteries with their stone crypts and wrought iron ornaments, but also take a stroll through the French Quarter, enjoy a paddle boat cruise on the river, and sample the local cuisine in one of the many restaurants in the city. You will have no problem finding accommodation that suits you with a range of small hotels in the historical area or classic Bed & Breakfasts. For your transport around the city, the bus service is excellent, the tram service is very efficient, and you can even explore the French Quarter by horse drawn carriage.
