What to do in Nagano : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Japanese city on the island of Honshu, Nagano has a little less than 400 000 inhabitants, and it was the Olympic Games in winter 1998 that made it known to the world. Its tourist attraction is constituted by its temple of the 7th century, around which the city was built, which makes it an important place of pilgrimage for the Buddhists, but also by its beautiful possibilities of excursions in the Japanese Alps. But Nagano is mainly the winter sports capital of Japan. You will find the famous Zenko-ji temple, with its statue of Buddha Amida, reported in 552 by missionaries returning from Korea (a reproduction because the real is hidden from view), but also some structures built for the Olympics that were transformed into a museum, such as the M-Wave, several hot springs including Kamakura Shinshu, considered the oldest hot spring in the region, and you can also explore not far from the city Jigokudani Park, space dedicated to Japanese macaques, Snow monkeys who frolic here in total freedom. See also the Shinano Museum of Fine Arts, and a 35-minute drive to the Togakushi Plateau, famous for its buckwheat noodles, sanctuary and botanical garden. We get to Nagano by train from Tokyo, and we move around the city thanks to the bus network which is very complete.
