What to do in Muscat : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of a rather private country, Muscat is a port city whose historic heritage remains intact, while at the same time it offers rather attractive hotel facilities and modern technologies that exist side by side with the old traditions. Oman has, besides common borders with Yemen and Saudi Arabia, a coast on the Indian Ocean which has enabled it to open up to tourism. In Muscat, nestled between rocky peaks, you will discover the famous Qaboos Mosque with its five minarets and high coffered dome, where the city’s art and history is concentrated and which is the largest place of worship in the country. The general decor of the city seems a little unreal, reminiscent of children’s tales, with colourful buildings and an extreme cleanliness. You can explore the countryside with a camel ride to admire the ocean sunsets, stroll through the maze of alleyways of the old town (with a guide if you do not want to get lost!). Do some shopping in the big Mutrah market where you will find local products and crafts, spices, incense, textiles, jewellery, but also enjoy a rest on the benches of the Corniche where you can experience the port activity, or visit one of the many terrace cafes where you can enjoy a mango juice . You could also try a Chicha in a cafe dedicated to this traditional drink. Whatever you do, you will no doubt enjoy the relaxed ambiance that exists in this city, situated between the past and present.
