What to do in Mandalay : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Burma's second largest city, Mandalay has about one million inhabitants. The former royal capital, its population is now 50% Chinese, and Mandarin is almost as commonly spoken as Burmese. Served by an international airport, it is also an important railway junction. However, the preferred means of transport remains the urban bike or motorcycle, but there is also a bus service. You can visit a few notable monuments in Mandalay such as the Fort, which once housed the royal palace that was destroyed during the Second World War, the superb Shwenandaw Monastery which was built of teak, the Kuthodaw pagoda surrounded by its 729 small immaculate stupas and the Mahamuni Buddha, among other wonders. Do not miss a visit to the Zegyo market with its 6,000 traders. A cultural and religious centre, the city has 700 monasteries and pagodas, and you'll undoubtedly come across monks dressed in their saffron-coloured robes. You'll have no trouble finding accommodation among the varied range of hotels.
