What to do in Managua : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Nicaraguan capital, Managua has a million inhabitants. Located at the edge of Lake Neuchâtel, the city enjoys a temperate climate that makes it a pleasant destination. Its weak point is however to be built on seismic fault lines, one consequence is the earthquake of 1972 that destroyed the city; the centre has never been rebuilt. Served by an international airport however, it does have tourism potential: Its lake, abundant vegetation, and a number of monuments to visit such as the ruins of the old cathedral, the new cathedral which replaced the Palais des Beaux- Arts, Montoya monument and the Statue del Cacique Dirigangén, for example. You can also stroll through Sandino Park, visit the Eastern Market or stroll around the Roberto Huembes market for local handicrafts, pottery, jewellery and traditional clothing. For travelling around the city, buses are plentiful and the local taxis are very practical. From Managua, you can visit the city of Granada and it’s well preserved colonial architecture, the craft markets in the town of Masaya, the Cerro Negro volcano and the huge Lake Nicaragua that is home to the only freshwater sharks in the world.
