What to do in Latvia

In Riga you will find trendy entertainment in the big cities. Its architecture offers some interesting elements, such as the old buildings of Vecriga, and the castle built in 1330, now serving as residence for the president. Do not miss to climb the steeple of Saint-Pierre church to admire the superb view. There are also beautiful parks from the 19th century, large boulevards and, to the south, the central market sheltered in old airship hangars used during World War II.

You can also discover the ancient ghetto of Riga in the outskirts of Maskavas, with the only synagogue there, as well as the Jewish museum. Another curiosity a few kilometers away, the Automobile Museum, exhibiting cars that were in possession of Stalin, Khrushchev or Gorky, but also some caricatured effigies of these celebrities. Also do not miss a drink on the square of the cathedral (Doma laukums) even late in the evening in summer.

Jurmala brings together under this name several small towns on the west coast of Riga, offering beaches, seaside resorts, dunes, forests, but also museums and restaurants, all accessible by train or taxi from Riga: a nice place to relax while staying close to the capital.

Other sites to visit include the Sigulda region, also known as Latvian Switzerland, with its medieval castles, caves, Gauja National Park and Turaida Castle, now a museum; The town of Bauska and its 15th century castle which serves as a setting for early music recitals; The palace of Rundale with its superb baroque architecture; The town of Kuldiga, with several historical sites, including an ancient fortress and a water mill; The Venta river and its waterfall of 275 meters wide.

Latvia: The basics

You do not need a visa for a stay of less than 3 months if you are a citizen of the EU.

The current currency is the euro.

Riga can be reached by plane from most European capitals, but you can also take the bus or the train from Berlin.

To move around the country, buses are very frequent, and trains serve the most important cities, for modest sums. In Riga, you can use the tram, the bus, or the trolleybus. On roads outside the city, you can easily drive or cycle because the tracks are in good condition.

Budget: Aside from Riga, Latvia is quite cheap. You will find average accommodation for about 50 €, and a decent restaurant for just over 15 €. The entrance to the museums never exceeds € 3, and a public transport ticket costs about € 0.70.

Health: classic vaccinations are recommended, as is Central European tick-borne encephalitis if you visit the country between April and October. Avoid drinking tap water.

Security: there is a low crime rate in this country, so be vigilant in Riga as in any large European city, no more and no less.

Shopping: you will necessarily bring amber, in the form of necklaces or bracelets. But there is also a craft that works different materials, wood, leather, stained glass, ceramics, textiles.
