What to do in La Paz : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The administrative capital of Bolivia, La Paz has over 800,000 inhabitants. It is the highest capital in the world at an altitude of 3,600 metres. Its history is marked by a number of political uprisings and social events. Its climate is fairly cool with a maximum of 20°C in the summer, but it has a high level of sunshine. A number of places and sites are definitely worth a visit. These include the Mercado Rodriguez which is a highly animated market at the weekends, some very festive bars in the quarter of Calle Belisario Salinas, the National Art Museum in the Palais Diez de Medina, the Tiwanaku National Museum of Archaeology that has a fine collection of pre-Columbian objects, and Jaen Street with its well preserved fine colonial style. Just outside the city you may want to visit Moon Valley with its impressive wind and rain eroded geological formations, Lake Titikaka that is only an hour away by road, the peaceful village of Coroico that is reached by a drive up a breathtaking road, or go part of the way along the ‘Gold Route’, a magnificent trek that leaves from Sorata, the most beautiful village in the Andes. In the city you will notice the attractive multi-coloured houses nestled along the side of the mountain and you will enjoy a visit to the many small local art boutiques that are certain to provide you with some lovely souvenirs to take home for you and your friends.
