What to do in Kathmandu : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Nepal, Kathmandu was built at an altitude of 1,300 metres and has a population of over 1.5 million. Suffering from high pollution yet undeniably captivating, this city was already populated around 900 BC. It found world renown through the hippy visitors in the 1970s, and the city has experienced strong development ever since. Buddhist temples and palaces abound. You should not miss a visit to Durbar Square with its temples and monuments including wooden sculptures, small squares and the Kumari house, some of these date back to the 12th Century. See the immaculate white stupa decorated with the eyes of Buddha that look in all directions. Stroll among the surrounding boutiques and stalls selling hundreds of craft objects and look for the incredible work of the painters that used very fine brushes to complete the Tanka, silk panels stretched over frames that were destined for the temples. The Thamel quarter is the most European in nature; it has a number of hotels and restaurants at affordable prices without being too far from the hive of activity present throughout the city with its many varied street stands, noise and bustle. At no time however will you feel ill at ease as the Nepalese are very gentle and serene people.
