What to do in Kandahar : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
A city in the south of Afghanistan, Kandahar is the old imperial capital and has a population nowadays of just over 200,000. Of major importance in the commercial activity of the country, Kandahar is also situated at the crossroads of several major routes. It is particularly well known nowadays for being the Jihadic strategic centre, and symbolic site, of the Taliban movement. Although tourism is not really practised in this area at present the city does still have a number of interesting buildings that merit a visit; Chihlzina, also known as the Forty Steps, which is a grotto carved into the rock bearing ancient Persian inscriptions, the Prophet’s hair Mosque, dating from the 19th Century of which the famous hair is safely kept in a gold casket protected by holy coverings, the Mausoleum of Ahmad Shah Durrani, a highly coloured building in the Mongol style with a turquoise dome, and the sanctuary of the Prophet’s cloak where you can admire the splendid marble decorations of one of the most holy places of the country.
