What to do in Kamakura : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Japanese city built at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, on the Miura Peninsula, Kamakura has just over 170 000 inhabitants. The city is one of the sites of old Japan that presents a real historical interest, with traces of the past scattered throughout the landscape, wich gives it an undeniable cultural wealth. Located 50 kilometers south of Tokyo, Kamakura is home to more than 60 Buddhist temples and almost twenty Shinto shrines. You can visit the city on foot without problem, and you will no doubt enjoy its calm, very different from the bustle of Japanese cities, its proximity to the beaches, and the surrounding hills laced with forest paths. See especially: the statue of the Great Buddha, bronze and measuring 14 meters high and weighs 850 tons; Temple J?chi-ji, dating from 1283, one of 5 great Zen temples of the city; the sanctuary of Zeniarai Benten dug into the rock; Shinto shrine Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, standing amid the ancient trees; Hase-dera Temple, with its gardens and its caves and its beautiful view of the bay. To get to Kamakura, one can take a train from Tokyo, which performs every day, and stop in the most remarkable sites. You can even buy a ticket that will include, in addition to travel, walking tour in the city and lunch in a typical local restaurant.
