What to do in Kabul : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Afghanistan, Kabul has a population of just under two and a half million. The city is situated at an altitude of 1,750 metres and has a harsh climate. Marked strongly by its history and the recent civil wars, the city shows a strong contrast between its modern urbanism and traditional culture with the Taliban presence that creates a permanent intimidation to the security of its population. There are a few buildings and monuments that have escaped total destruction during the wars; a part of the Bala Hissar fortress, Babour’s tomb in the garden of the same name, the mausoleum of Chah Djahan made of white marble, the old Royal Palace, and the mosque of Djada-e Esteqlal are some of them. A few kilometres from the city you will find the ruins of the Tchehel Soutoun Palace of 40 columns. Visit the rebuilt National Museum. The Kaboul bazaars are also worth a detour to discover the wealth of skills used by the local craftsmen to make a variety of objects. Given the current political situation Kabul is obviously not a popular or recommended tourist destination at present but there are definitely some admirable places to visit when the problems subside.
