What to do in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Previously known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the most populated city in Vietnam with over 7 million inhabitants, even more than the capital Hanoi. It is situated close to the Mekong delta and plays a major role in the country’s economy. Numerous monuments and buildings in the city are worth a visit; the red brick cathedral of Notre Dame, the opera house which is a reproduction of the Petit Palais in Paris, the great Central Post Office the form of which was imagined by Gustave Eiffel, the City Hall, the Palace of Reunification, multiple pagodas and the Indian mosque are just some example. Do find time to visit the Museum of the Revolution and Cholon, the Chinese quarter, with its food stalls and temples, also the Ben Thanh market. You will certainly enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city, highly dynamic but shadowed by pollution and awful traffic jams. Try to visit Ho Chi Minh during the dry season, between November and April. You will have no trouble finding suitable accommodation; there is a great range of hotels at varying levels of comfort and to suit all budgets.
