What to do in Fort-de-France : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
French city in the overseas department of Martinique, Fort de France has a population of around 90,000. An economic, administrative and cultural pole, the city is situated alongside a bay in the centre of the island and dominated by the Fort St Louis, a reminder of the fierce battles in times past between the French and English for the ownership of this Caribbean island. There are guided tours around the city that will introduce you to Savannah Park, Romero Place, the Fort de France theatre, the Great Market, the Saint Louis Cathedral, the Floral Park and the Church of St. Antoine de Padoue. You may wish to take a pleasant sea trip to visit the Pointe des Nègres or the Bat Cave, or visit the centre of the island on a hike with a guide through the tropical rain forest to the Absalon thermal spa. A number of museums are worth a visit including the Museum of Pre-Colombian Archaeology and Martinican Pre-history and the Museum of history and Ethnography. Or you can simply enjoy the tropical atmosphere of the city by strolling through the streets, visiting the spice market or the fish market that will combine to overwhelm your senses with the various aromas and colours.
