What to do in Edinburgh : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The Capital of Scotland, Edinburgh has just over 500,000 inhabitants. A major economic and cultural centre, it is home to a number of interesting places and sites, certain of which are classified by UNESCO in their World Heritage List. Edinburgh is also home to the Festival of the same name which is internationally renowned for its events and displays in the performing arts; theatre, music, opera and dance. Do not miss a visit to the castle that dominates the city, but make sure you also see the Royal Botanical Gardens, Saint Giles Cathedral, the Royal Museum of Scotland and Holyrood Park. Strolling around the old city will help you appreciate its quasi intact medieval characteristics, but the new city also merits time spent there, as well as the historic port of Leith. Moving around by tram or bus is easy, but on foot or cycling are also great as they allow you to really slow down and look at the lovely sights in the city. You will probably be surprised by the tradition of the One O’Clock Gun, the cannon that is fired every day at 1 pm from the ramparts of the castle. Do try some of the food available in the local restaurants, ranging from filling and traditional Scottish dishes to the more innovative dishes created nowadays.
