What to do in Charlotte-Amalie : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of the US Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie is just under 20 000 inhabitants, and is located south of the island of St. Thomas. Its port hosts many cruise ships, but also sailboats and yachts, which makes a buzzing place. You will discover in the city's many treasures, including the following examples: pastel houses with red tiled roofs, sheltered under palm trees; Fort Christian, the oldest building of the virgin islands, now housing the Virgin Island Museum; Lille Tarne Gade (rue de la Petite Tour in Danish) has 99 steps; the ancient castle of Blackbeard, the former pirate, now a restaurant; Drake's Seat observation point from which the browser was monitoring its fleet and where one has a panoramic view of the archipelago and Magens Bay, one of the finest beaches in the world; Gallery Camille Pissarro, where you can admire the works of the famous painter, born in the city; Market Square, the former slave market place. To get around town, buses exist, but you will also find easily taxis or you can rent a car. Also do: take the cable car that takes you to Paradise Point, on the heights of the city; stroll in Emancipation Garden, park designed in tribute to the abolition of slavery.
