What to do in Cayenne : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
A city in French Guinea, Cayenne has a population of around 60,000. It enjoys a humid equatorial climate with an average temperature of 26°C and lots of sunshine, a pleasant climate despite the high rainfall. However it should be noted that many coastal beaches experience influxes of mud. The city essentially plays an administrative and commercial role, especially reinforced by the Kourou Aerospace Centre. You will enjoy a visit to the Palmists Quarter, and visit Fort Cépérou, built in 1643. The Palmists Bar is in an old noble’s house dating from the 19th Century. There is also the Place de Grenoble with its lovely fountain and magnificent trees, the Franconnie building made of wood with its library and museum, the Saint Sauveur cathedral and the Place des Amandiers on the seafront, a lovely place to sit and relax, and there is also the Chinese quarter and the Quartier de la Crique which is very lively at night. You will probably admire the old renovated Creole houses in the city centre in lovely pastel colours. If you visit between January and March you may have the opportunity to take part in the Carnival, a major event in this part of the world, when you can enjoy processions and sumptuous masked balls.
