What to do in Caracas : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The Capital of Venezuela, Caracas has nearly five million inhabitants. Surrounded by slums, it is built in a valley encircled with hills. The tropical climate of Caracas is slightly alleviated by its altitude. Temperatures vary between 16°C and 30°C according to the season. In the city you can take a trip on the cable car to Avila Mountain at 2,600 metres altitude, the climate is more pleasant at this altitude and you can enjoy a splendid view, see some of the city’s heritage or go on a hiking or 4 X 4 excursion in the surrounding area. This is definitely the most original tourist attraction in the city. However Caracas is also a major cultural centre and you should definitely visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Plaza Bolivar, the Cathedral with its paintings by Rubens and Murillo, and of course, the birthplace of Simon Bolivar. There are also numerous shops and boutiques spread about the city to browse among. To relax among natural surroundings we would recommend the Botanical Gardens and the Parc Los Caobos. The metro train is useful and practical as a means of transport to get around the city.
