What to do in Baku : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku is built on the shores of the Caspian Sea. With a population of just over two million, it has existed since a thousand years BC and has ruins dating from the 5th Century. In the city centre you can see the fortified town with its winding streets that displays its cultural diversity through remaining traces of its past. Two places in particular should not be missed; the Palace of the Chars of Chirvan built in the 15th Century, and the Tower of the Virgin, originating from the 6th Century BC and restored in the 12th Century. To the south the new city offers modern architecture and a geometric layout which does not detract from its elegance. There are a number of museums worth visiting and the mosques too which are open to non-Muslims, as well as some other sites of pilgrimage. Other interesting places include the Place of the Fountains, the neo-classical belfry of the City Hall, the Art Nouveau style of the Oil Palace, the Museum of Rugs and Applied Arts, the Martyrs Alley, the Institute of manuscripts and the Ismaillya Palace. The city’s temperate climate and proximity to beaches make it a popular holiday destination for the Russians in particular.
