Capital of the State of Georgia, the city itself has a population of just over 500,000 although that of the entire agglomeration is above five million. Its climate is sub-tropical with gentle winters and hot, humid summers. Atlanta is the birthplace of many hip-hop artists and was also the birthplace of Martin Luther King; several monuments there are dedicated to him. A famous daughter of this city was Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind; her house is open to visits. Other buildings and places worth visiting include the Coca Cola Museum, the CNN studios, the Jimmy Carter Library, Oakland cemetery, the only monument to survive the War of Secession, Stone Mountain with its carvings of the American Confederate Leaders, and there is also the High Museum of Art with its excellent collections of paintings, Georgia Aquarium which is the largest worldwide with 500 different species of marine life, and the Botanical gardens with different habitats reproduced I huge greenhouses. Atlanta is a modern metropolis that offers a great variety of different attractions, from evening entertainment to a range of sporting events. The local cuisine is also worth tasting in one of the many restaurant facilities spread throughout the city.
