What to do in Akita : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Akita is the capital of a prefecture of the same name in Japan, situated in the Oga Peninsula. Its major claim to fame is the renovation of numerous Palaeolithic remains in its area. It is also well known for the production of quality rice and its cedar forests. The city has a population of around 330,000 and is a major industrial and cultural centre. Akita has numerous crafts museums as well as a highly prosperous timber industry and oil fields. Senshu Park is worth a visit, it is very popular with the residents who like to see the flowering cherry trees in spring. You may also enjoy a visit to the city library or the Fine Arts Museum. The liveliest area is the Kawabata Avenue which boasts hundreds of bars and restaurants where you can taste all the different specialties from around the country. Another place a little further from Akita that should not be missed is the Oga Gao Aquarium that has 400 different types of fish and aquatic animals. From there continue to the Hachibodai plains, a very pleasant country area where you can enjoy magnificent views over lakes and the bay, the best time for these is at dusk.
