For once, it’s not happening in Dubai but not far from there, in Abu Dhabi. However, as always in the Gulf, this is a pharaonic project with exceptional architecture whose inauguration is planned by the end of the year.
It is indeed in December 2025 that the Zayed National Museum should open its doors in the capital of the United Arab Emirates. This should certainly delight those interested in Middle Eastern culture in this city that already hosts its Louvre Abu Dhabi and will soon also welcome its branch of the famous Guggenheim.
300,000 years of history
If further proof were needed that the Emirates are interested in tourism, here’s another one. After a good decade of studies and construction work, the Zayed National Museum will soon open its 66,000 square metres to the public.
Designed to celebrate the country’s culture and heritage, it will cover 300,000 years of history in the region, from ancient times to the present day. To achieve this, it will present a rich collection of diverse objects and testimonies, combined with digital discoveries, spread across six galleries dealing with themes such as falconry, desert life, oases and mountains, marine and coastal life, faith and Islam, as well as the life of Sheikh Zayed. Because the man who gave his name to this museum remains an important figure in the country as he is the founding father of the nation.
In short, a great museum that should quickly find its audience in the same way as the Louvre “branch” installed there, not very far away actually, since 2017.
But whilst the exhibitions promise to be most remarkable, the architecture of the place is equally so. Created by Norman Foster, the architect of the Millau Viaduct and several other projects, the building is characterised in its form by five steel towers inspired by the wings of a falcon; these same falcons being symbols of Emirati culture and beloved by Sheikh Zayed. A quest that is both aesthetic and cultural, but which also allows the building to ensure its own air conditioning through some technical and architectural prowess. Something that will certainly make an impression as well…
