A city in the Netherlands, Vlissingen, or Flessingue, has about 45,000 inhabitants. Located at the mouth of the Scheldt, in the 7th Century it was a simple fishing village. It is now a resort that attracts tourists with its lively harbours and beautiful beaches. You can visit the Maritime Museum, housed in 15th and 17th Century buildings, that recounts the city’s rich maritime history and the Het Arsenaal Marine Attraction Centre that offers a very original show with a naval shipwreck simulation and a giant aquarium. Stroll pleasantly in the city centre, which offers a mix of older and modern architecture, with its statues of old sailors, and contemporary objects such as the Wind Organs, in which the wind blows and generates changing melodies in bamboo tubes. You will not fail to admire the city monuments such as St. Jacques Church, the Prisoners Tower, Fort Carolingian castle, and Four Winds Square.
