What to do in Tbilissi : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Georgia, Tbilisi is built on the banks of the Kura and has one million inhabitants. The city experiences mild winters and hot summers, as protected by the chain of the Caucasus Mountains. We can move there by subway or bus, or in marchroutkas (private vans that serve the small streets). What to see in Tbilisi? The city does not lack charm and you will appreciate its twinkling lights at night, illuminating the glass dome of the new presidential palace, the fortress Narikala, Rustaveli Avenue, the high tower of the television or the Peace Bridge . The old town worth a visit, with its narrow streets that run along the Sololaki hill dotted with fountains and terraces, small squares surrounded by houses with wooden balconies, a special sign of the local architecture. Do not miss the churches, like the Sioni Cathedral in the Old Town, whose frescoes and icons are superb testimonies of Orthodox art, or, in contrast, the new Sameba cathedral, high 84 meters and designed in a neo medieval style. See also: the flea market, on the right bank of the Kura; instead of baths, hammams with the brick domes, dominated by Méthékhi church; the facade of the Orbeliani bath establishment with its blue ceramics and gold and Persian architecture; the Baratashvili Bridge, the largest and most central of all those who straddle the Kura, with its lovely contemporary bronze statues; old walls illuminated at night with multicolored lights. For night owls, the Tunnel concert hall offers a trendy programming, and Chardin Street cafes in the old town welcome revelers until dawn. Another feature of Tbilisi food represents a very important aspect of Georgian life, and the capital is no exception. So you will find many places where you can taste specialties and the flagship drink of the country wine. Finally, to try it: the sulfur baths and purifying properties, you can practice in multiple baths of Abonotubani area of the old city.
