The second largest city in Russia, St. Petersburg has nearly five million inhabitants. Located on the Neva River delta, it has remarkable architecture, and is the second largest Russian port on the Baltic. A beautiful city that is very popular with tourists, it was the preferred place of residence of the tsars, and many places testify to the splendour and wealth of this bygone era. You will discover hundreds of monuments and dozens of museums include the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Winter Palace, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bronze Horseman, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Smolny Convent, the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the Summer Garden, and the Hermitage Museum among others. The city is also the cultural capital of the country, and there are many places to enjoy theatre and music, linked to famous names such as the Kirov Ballet and Tchaikovsky. St Petersbourg is also the scene for events such as White Nights Festival, which offers various shows during the three weeks of June when the sun never sets. Buses, trams and the metro allow you to easily move around the city which is served by two airports, one of them international.
