The capital of Bulgaria, Sofia has a little less than a million and a half inhabitants. The cultural and political centre of the country, Sofia is located in western Bulgaria, at the foot of the 2,290 metre Mount Vitosha, which is also a pleasant resort and a very popular destination for Bulgarians. The city has a continental climate, with large temperature ranges and marked differences depending on the year. It dates back to the 8th century BC, and has experienced Roman influences, followed by Byzantine. You can visit a number of historical heritage monuments, such as the Hagia Sophia Basilica, St. George’s church, the Banya Bashi Mosque or the Mosque of the Baths, the beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Monument to the Liberator Tsar, a bronze statue erected in honour of Alexander II, the National Assembly building, or the Stefan Stambolov monument. Do not overlook the Archaeological Museum if you love ancient arts, the Ivan Vazov National theatre, the National Museum of History and its collection of cultural heritage objects, and the National Palace of Culture that hosts shows and concerts within its remarkable modern architectural building.
