What to do in Sarajevo : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo has about 700,000 inhabitants. This city has a rich yet turbulent history; it served as the location of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria that coincided with the beginning of the First World War. Located in a mountainous and forested geographical environment, the city is close to the source of the River Bosna, an attraction popular with foreign visitors and Sarajevans alike. Sarajevo has a moderate continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers. Many cultural events take place in the city: Bašcaršija Nights in July, with a variety of shows, a winter festival dedicated to cinema, and a jazz festival, to name just a few. A number of museums and institutions are also worth visiting: The Historical Archives of the city with thousands of documents from the Ottoman period, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina covers the entire history of the country, and the Ars Aevi Museum, dedicated to contemporary art. The city has a rich architectural heritage, especially from the Ottoman period, in the centre of the city can be seen the Gazi Husrev-beg mosque, the Orthodox Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and Goat Bridge, which are all worth visiting. Transport around the city is very efficient and you can choose between trams, trolleys and buses. The city is also served by an international airport.
