The main city of Sicily in Italy, Palermo has over 700,000 inhabitants. It is located on the north coast of the island in the Mediterranean Sea, the Oreto River traverses it and it is surrounded by peaks. The climate is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot and dry summers. Built in the 8th Century, the city has a rich history, with various cultural influences including Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Muslim, then Aragon and Austrian. Today, it is served by an airport, highways, railway, and a very active port. For travelling around the city itself, there are two subway lines. You can visit several interesting museums, including the Abatellis Palace, the Regional Archaeological Museum, the Sicilian Ethnographical Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art among others. Many monuments are also worth a visit such as the Norman Palace with a Palatine Chapel, St. John of the Hermits church, the cathedral Our Lady of the Assumption, the Quatro Canti which is the centre of the city with its baroque houses, the Piazza Pretoria, and also the Botanical Gardens and the catacombs of the Capuchin monastery. The markets are also full of life and picturesque places that should not be missed.
