A French city in Provence, Marseille has a little under a million inhabitants, making it the second largest city in France. The primary French port, it was built in 600 BC. It enjoys a mild climate with lots of sunlight. Its history has been marked by a number of major influences: The presence of the Greeks and the Romans, its participation in the Middle Ages Crusades, its port activity in different trades with the colonies, all these have left traces in the city. Served by a busy airport, it is also easily accessible by road and rail. Two metro lines and two tram lines facilitate travel within the city, as well as numerous buses. You will discover many remarkable monuments: Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde with its gilded copper statue that dominates the city, the Fort Saint-Jean, and the Palais du Pharo, are just a few examples. The Canebière and the Old Port are definitely places worth a visit, but you can also relax in one of the many gardens, or on the Prado beaches. The city also has a number of museums and many theatres. Do not miss tasting the local specialties such as bouillabaisse and aioli, after enjoying a Pastis on a shaded terrace.
