The capital of Mozambique is located on the Indian Ocean at the mouth of the Tembe River and less than 80 kilometers from the border with South Africa. Its total population, considering the whole urban area, has over two million and a half inhabitants. The city was badly damaged during the civil war but it does not have under a beautiful architectural heritage: you will not miss the Art Deco buildings like the Clube Ferroviario or Gil Vicente theater, or colonial buildings like Gare Central or the Iron House, both built from plans Gustave Eiffel, but also villas that stand in the residential area, or the municipal market. A number of other sites worth visiting: Tunduru Botanical Garden, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Conception, the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre, the Portuguese fort, the National Library, the mosques and Ismael Salazar, Heroes Square with his mausoleum where lie the heroes of the revolution, the Museum of Arts, one of the Revolution, but also the suburb of Catembe and fishing village, Inhaca Island and east of the bay. Night owls can also spend a musical evening at the Jazz Café from the station, and the gourmet lunch at the fish market.
