What to do in Lyon : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

LyonA French city situated at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, Lyon has about 500,000 inhabitants. With a rich history, the city has existed since antiquity. It remains today at the crossroads of many French and European routes. In the city, metro, tram, trolleybus and bus assist in getting people around easily. In addition, there is a funicular service and bicycle rental. Lyon is well served by an airport and a main railway line. Highly regarded for its quality of life, the city also offers tourists a rich heritage, both architecturally and culturally. The city is listed as a world heritage area by UNESCO, with ancient sites such as Fourvière hill, and the medieval and Renaissance parts of the old city among others. We cannot describe all the remarkable monuments and places, but you may wish to visit the town hall on the Place Bellecour, the Celestine Theatre, the Rose Tower, the Saint-Jean Palace, Bonaparte Bridge, the Saint Nizier church, see the mullioned windows of the houses in the slope of the Great Coast... Regarding the museums, you may wish to visit the Museum of Fine Arts, the Gallo-Roman Museum, the City Hospices, the Textile and Decorative Arts Museum, the Light Institute and History Centre of Resistance and Deportation. In addition, many festivals take place throughout the year: The Festival of Lights in December, Fourvière Nights with music, theatre and cinema in the summer, or the Quais du Polar dedicated to crime fiction in March. We should also mention the gastronomic reputation of the city, home to famous chefs including Bocuse and Blanc, and the traditional local meals served in many restaurants, the presence of the ‘Coteaux du Beaujolais’ and the Côtes-du-Rhône, producing perfect wines to accompany all the delicious culinary specialties of Lyon.
