What to do in Luanda : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of Angola, Luanda has a little under 5 million inhabitants, of which a significant number live in slums and have no access to clean drinking water. A former Portuguese colony, it is divided into two distinct parts: The lower city with its colonial buildings, the harbour and the fort, and the upper town, more modern in style. Tourism is mainly based around Cabo Island, just at the entrance of the bay with its beautiful white sandy beaches, coconut palms, and the existence of the colourful City Carnival. There are also many churches, including the 17th century baroque Church of Jesus, and the Sé Cathedral of Luanda. You can walk around the old city and visit the museums, especially the Historical Museum and the Museum of Dunbo, take a stroll to browse among the many handicrafts, statues, masks and sculptures on offer everywhere, enjoy many types of water activities, and visit the national park of Quiçama to see the Ruacanà and Kalendula waterfalls while observing the wide range of wildlife. For local transport, the local buses and taxis are very affordable throughout the city.
