Situated in the Canary Islands, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the most populated town in the archipelago and the economic and administrative centre of the island. Known today for its carnival, it was originally built in the 15th Century and its economy grew from the cultivation of sugar cane. Nowadays tourism is its primary resource. This is partly due to its excellent climate that boasts a high level of sunshine with low precipitation. Visit the Canary Islands cathedral, seat of the bishopric, the Casa Colon – a palace transformed into a museum dedicated to business expeditions to the New World, the Museum of Modern Art, Fort Castillo de la Luz that dates back to the 16th Century. Take a walk along the Paseo de las Canteras that runs alongside the magnificent beach of the same name, stroll along the main street; Calle Mayor de Triana, which is for pedestrians only where a host of shops and boutiques can be discovered. Enjoy the exuberant night life of the city and take part in one of the numerous festivals that are hosted by this city; The Festival of Cinema and the Music Festival among others.
