Capital of Finland, Helsinki has over 500,000 inhabitants. Situated on a peninsula, the city is also a major trade port. The presence of water has strongly marked the city’s identity; it spreads over the islands and varied peninsulas. To get around you can use tramways, the metro, the bus or ferries. Several museums are worth a visit, the largest is the National Museum which resembles a medieval castle, and there is also the Helsinki City Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Finnish National Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. Theatre, opera and music are the main cultural axes of this city which is home to the National Opera and the Finnish National Theatre. The city also offers a number of leisure parks, swimming pools and covered skating rinks for those who enjoy sporting pastimes. The architecture is inspiring, visit the Uspenski Cathedral with its oriental style, the more functional Lasipalatsi building or the neo-classical style prevalent in the city centre.
