What to do in Faro (Algarve) : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
Capital of the Algarve, Faro’s international airport serves the entire touristic sector of the area’s coastline; it is very popular with foreign visitors and particularly those from Northern Europe. The city has a population of nearly 60,000. Apart from acting as a gateway to other places in the Algarve such as Portimao, Faro has many places that make it worth a visit itself such as its enclosure of Roman murals, the 13th Century Roman and Moorish ruins, the 18th Century buildings, theatres, the cathedral, its Episcopal Palace, and the convent transformed into an archaeological museum are all notable examples. Golf players will enjoy a visit here as it has around 20 courses along the coast. Do try the local dishes that reflect a mixture of influences from the countryside and sea. The lovely climate favours the cultivation of fruit, particularly citrus, and contributes to making visits to the beaches along the coastline very pleasant. Accommodation is easy to find here, the range is varied in terms of type and price. Do not limit yourself to the coast, inland the Algarve has plenty of hidden charms; between the orchards and the mountains you will find plenty to explore and discover.
