What to do in Djerba : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
An island belonging to Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabes, Djerba is just over 500 km 2 and its main city, Houmt Souk, has a population of just under 55,000. A major tourist destination of Tunisia, it is linked to the continent by a ferry and a road that joins the Zarzis Peninsula. It has a Mediterranean climate, refreshed by the sea breezes and has become a popular resort. Its coast is dotted with forts including Borj El Kebir which has been transformed into a museum. You may also wish to visit the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions or Djerba Explore, a theme park which is home to a rebuilt traditional Djerba village, or take part in the numerous cultural events and festivals that take place here at various times throughout the year. These include the International Djerba Ulysses Festival for music and theatre, the Guellala Pottery Festival, the World Island Music and Film Festival, and the Festival of Diving and Traditional Sailing. The magnificent sandy beaches of the island are definitely one of Djerba’s major attractions, and the hotel infrastructure as well as the international airport of Djerba-Zarzis both contribute to the increased growth of tourism on the island.
