What to do in Dakar : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants
The capital of Senegal, Dakar has over a million inhabitants, more than double that if the entire agglomeration is included. Situated on an ancient volcano, the city enjoys a micro-climate benefitting from the trade winds and experiencing the monsoon season. Its annual average temperature is 27°C. Dakar hosts several major cultural events such as the World Festival of Negro Arts created by Léopold Sédar Senghor, the ‘Festival International du Film de Quartier’, the International Dance Festival, and the African Contemporary Art Biennial. A visit to the Théodore Monod Museum of African Art, dedicated to the art and traditions of western Africa, is highly recommended, and for night life you may wish to visit the Youssou Ndour discotheque. From Dakar you can also visit Gorée Island, just off the coast. Walking around Dakar you will be able to see the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral of African Memories, the new Mosque and the ‘Porte du Troisième millénaire’. A city of contrasts, Dakar will not leave you indifferent; its lively night life, dozens of local markets, peaceful beaches, and the National Park on the Madeleine Islands are all places that will reveal to you a fuller vision and understanding of the bustling yet serene city of Dakar.
