What to do in Colmar : Tips, places, hotels and restaurants

ColmarLocated in Alsace, in eastern France, Colmar has about 67,000 inhabitants and offers an extraordinary historical and architectural heritage. Close to Germany and Switzerland, however, it has a rustic charm that makes it very attractive and pleasant. Its historic center, carefully restored, is crossed by a large pedestrian zone, and you will discover sites and monuments that reflect a history spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century: the Heads House, 17th century with 111 heads adorning its facade; the Pfister House, bourgeois Renaissance building; the Dominican church and the Virgin rose bush in the Gothic style; Collegiate St. Martin, also gothic, with its count so pure; the Unterlinden Museum, renowned beyond the borders for its collection of Rhenish sculptures and Issenheim altarpiece; Bartholdi Museum housed in the birthplace of the latter, with its statues, drawings and paintings; the Koïfhus, old customs, which is also the oldest building in the city; Palace of the Sovereign Council, with its neoclassical façade from 1771; Old Hospital, which houses the library today; the platform of the Fish, the surrounding area is now called Little Venice. During your walks, you will also notice the statues of Bartholdi scattered throughout the city, the beautiful signs, roofs and their original colors. Colmar can be accessed by train (2H30 from Paris by TGV), the motorway from Lyon or Paris or several other European capitals, but for those who arrive by plane, the airport the closest is the Strasbourg 70 km. To move around the city, there are several solutions: rent a bike, take a small tourist train with commentary in 14 languages, use the bus network, take a taxi or rent a car. You can also explore by boat in Little Venice with its timbered houses and beautiful vegetation.
